600 x 1200 or 600 x 600? Picking the right tile size, room by room

Walk into any showroom in Ludhiana and the first thing you are asked is "2x4 or 2x2?" before you have even looked at a design. It sounds like a small decision. It is not. The size decides how many joints you see, how big the room feels, how the tile is laid, and whether it will survive a terrace in July.
Here is how we answer that question at the Pakhowal Road showroom, without the sales talk.
The two sizes most homes use
The designs on this site come in the two sizes most Punjab homes are laid in: 600 x 1200 mm (what everyone calls 2x4) and 600 x 600 mm (2x2). Both pack to 15.5 sq ft a box: two pieces of 2x4, four pieces of 2x2. Same coverage per box means your box count does not change when you change your mind about size, which happens more often than you would think.
Other sizes come from the full catalogue of 10,000+ designs, on order. If a room needs something else, send the size on WhatsApp and we will show you what is available.
600 x 1200 for the rooms people sit in

Drawing room, bedrooms, dining, kitchen floor, bathroom walls: this is 2x4 territory. A 12 x 15 ft room takes about 13 boxes and the floor reads as a few big slabs rather than a chessboard. Marble and statuario designs in particular need the long face to show their veins; cut them small and the vein looks like a scratch.
The 2x4 range at Drambay is glossy and high-gloss PGVT (plus a carving matt range for anyone who wants texture indoors). All of it is for indoor floors and walls. Do not put it on an open terrace, however nice it looks in the showroom.

600 x 600 for terrace, parking and wet floors

Our 2x2 tiles are matt porcelain and full-body vitrified. Matt gives grip when the floor is wet; full-body means the colour runs right through the tile, so a chip from a car tyre or a gas cylinder does not show a white body underneath.
A smaller tile also follows the slope of a terrace better. Water has to run to the drain; big slabs on a sloped floor leave puddles at the joints.
A simple rule for mixed houses
Most Punjab homes end up with both: 2x4 inside, 2x2 on the roof, stairs landing and parking. If you want the house to feel like one place, keep the colour family the same across both. A grey statuario inside and a grey matt stone outside reads as a plan. A cream inside and a dark red outside reads as two different purchases.
Bring your room sizes to the showroom (length x width, in feet, is enough) and we will give you the box count for each room on WhatsApp the same day.
Questions we get asked
- Can I use 600 x 600 inside the house?
- Yes, in utility areas, bathroom floors and small rooms. For the drawing room and bedrooms most families prefer the fewer joints of 2x4.
- Is 600 x 1200 harder to lay?
- It needs a flatter base and a tiler who has laid large format before. Ask for a 2 mm spacer and a levelling clip; it is standard now in Ludhiana.
- Do both sizes come from the same batch?
- Each order is dispatched from a single batch and shade-checked before it leaves. Different sizes are different batches by nature, which is why we suggest keeping them in different areas of the house.
